The Arches School Sport Partnership believe that participation in high quality PE and Sport is valuable in its own right because of the specific educational outcomes and the personal, social and health benefits.

It is also a very effective means of engaging young people in their broader learning, by raising aspirations, providing motivation and promoting behaviours that lead to higher levels of attainment across the full range of school subjects.

Because of this, we believe that every child in Sheffield deserves equal access to high quality PE and Sport leaning environments and programmes that are inclusive, safe, challenging, progressive and enjoyable. These opportunities should be embedded in the school curriculum, be available as out of school hour’s provision and also in the community.

To Increase Participation in High Quality Physical Education

The Arches School Sport Partnership work alongside Primary and Secondary Schools to ensure that all children receive high quality Physical Education. It is imperative that Physical Education is seen as being as important as other subjects in the school curriculum and is seen as a support tool for those other subjects. From teacher CPD workshops, team teaching, lesson planning support and lesson observations the Arches support member schools in various ways.

Areas of support include:

Teacher CPD workshops

Team teaching

Lesson planning support

Lesson observations

To Increase Participation in High Quality Out of School Hours Learning

It is important that all children have the opportunity to participate in high quality learning outside of the school curriculum. The Arches School Sport Partnership works with schools to provide School Sports Coaching as well as other support mechanisms. This allows all of the schools that we work with to provide a broad, rich and engaging menu of activities that will engage all children where possible.

Areas of Support include:

Provide a broad, rich and engaging menu of activities.

To Increase Opportunities for Children and Young People to Compete and Perform in Various Environments

Through competition, events and performances the Arches School Sport Partnership provide opportunities for children to take part within school as well as giving children the chance to represent their school in a wide range of sports and activities throughout the academic year. On top of the large menu of sports offered by the School Games the Arches School Sport Partnership develop further opportunities through specific programmes as well as delivering major events such as the Dance Performance, Activity Afternoons and the annual Arches Partnership Games.

Areas of development include:

Dance Performance

Activity Afternoons

To Promote the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Aspects of Physical Education and School Sport

The Arches School Sport Partnership work with schools to ensure that all aspects of Physical Education and School Sport are expressed throughout their provision. This allows all schools to work on aspects of Leadership, Teamwork, Communication and Resilience, as well as many other aspects, throughout lessons and club sessions. This helps embed Physical Education and School Sport within school even further and increases this as a priority area for schools.

Areas of development include:

Leadership

Teamwork

Communication

Resilience

To Develop Opportunities to Increase Leadership and Citizenship Through Sport and Physical Education

As well as participation in Physical Education and School Sport the Arches School Sport Partnership work throughout the academic year to promote opportunities for children and students to become sports leaders, coaches, officials and team managers. In both Secondary and Primary School the Arches School Sport Partnership have various programmes such as Leadership Academies, School Sports Crews and a menu of events and awards available for schools to engage with. All these opportunities promote citizenship within the local community and help support children and students to make positive contributions to their local area.

Promote opportunities for children and students to become:

Sports Leaders

Coaches

Officials

Team Managers

To Develop Appropriate Talent Identification Pathways to Ensure Lifelong Participation in Sport

It is important throughout all provision in schools that there is a clear pathway for children to engage in further sport and physical activity. It is also however important that the pathway is appropriate to their ability levels and will enthuse them to create a lifelong love for the sport. The Arches School Sport Partnership work with schools, clubs and national governing bodies to ensure that these appropriate pathways are linked together and further participation in sport at a higher level can be developed.

To Promote and Increase Community Based Sport and Physical Activity as Well as Healthy Lifestyles across Local Communities

The Arches School Sport Partnership work with a number of community partners including Activity Sheffield, Zest and South Yorkshire Sport, as well as National Governing Bodies of sport, and many more, to promote community sport outside of school. All projects developed through the Arches School Sport Partnership have some link to a community club where possible, providing affiliated and appropriate exit routes for children. A number of programmes focus specifically on community needs around our schools and will work to engage children through the school environment, with the aim of offering children information on community provision that they can get involved within.
