The Arches is passionate about supporting leadership within our primary schools to grow and nurture the next generation of sports leaders.
To introduce foundation leadership into school years 1 to 3 (KS1) we have created a unique scheme called “Paws for Sport”. This is a reward and recognition scheme for pupils who demonstrate leadership skills through PE lessons, playground games and classroom working. The children then are issued with a sticker each time they show leadership by a member of staff. Once they gain a certain number of stickers they are then awarded with bronze, silver and gold certificates depending on how many they have collected. This both encourages children to continue to grow as leaders and provides them a new role in which they are empowered to lead their peers and take on responsibility.
Leadership then progresses at it reaches key stage 2 which consists of Years 4 to 6 children. Through staff tutoring, the Arches train primary school staff to deliver a nationally recognised award. Children are taught how to deliver playground based activities and games, with careful support and guidance from school staff. Upon completion, the children are then awarded with The Sports Leaders UK Young Leader Award, a certificate that has had a huge impact on the confidence and self esteem of those who have taken part in the scheme.
