The Arches School Sport Partnership have this year worked together with the Sheffield Eagles and the Include foundation to bring Rugby League to over 2000 Sheffield Primary School Pupils.
Building on the back of Sky Try funding last academic year the Include Foundation sourced funding to cover coaching that has taken place in 39 Primary Schools from January to May 2018, coaching on average 60 pupils per school (reaching 2340 pupils across the programme). This has given all pupils at least 5 weeks of delivery of sessions and has upskilled Primary Staff on how to embed Rugby League in their PE lessons. Delivering these sessions has been Matty Fozzard and Ollie Davies who are players from the Sheffield Eagles and qualified coaches.
Schools who received this programme for 2017-18 were as follows:
Hinde House, Hartley Brook, Beck, Pathways, Pye Bank, Watercliffe Meadow, St Catherines, Hillsborough, Mansel, St Thomas More, Fox Hill, Meynell, Monteney, Southey Green, St Maries, Greystones, Dobcroft, Hunter Bar, Porter Croft, Nether Green Jrs, High Green, Windmill Hill, Greengate Lane, Abbeyfield, Angram Bank, Hatfield, Oasis Fir Vale, St Marys Catholic, Marlcliffe, St Marys CE Walkley, Rivelin, Malin Bridge, Shooters Grove, Sacred Heart, Nook Lane, Wisewood, Mosborough, Halfway Jrs
These schools were mapped in around the three local exit routes for Under 9's Rugby in the city of Sheffield. Something which has grown from one club opportunity in the last year.
There is also the Secondary Programme of Competition through the SFSS which has seen between 4 and 8 Secondary Schools engage in competitions for Y7, Y8, Y9 Y10/11 Boys and KS3 Girls across the city. These have two competitions for each age group and a finals night- All being delivered at All Saints School with Mr Perry (Meadowhead) and Mr Shaw (All Saints) leading this programme.
Primary Competitions have also taken place having two Y4 tournaments as part of the South Yorkshire School Games, totalling 24 Schools at Year 4. This progressed in to a county final as part of the School Games and saw 4 Sheffield teams play in a county level final with Shooters Grove achieving a Bronze Medal. These schools were not just the ones who engaged in the coaching aspect of the programme and therefore another number of schools have entered and expressed interest in playing Rugby League moving forward. The Arches SSP also ran a Y5 Rugby Competition as part of our annual Partnership Games which saw 18 teams at Year 5 compete in Tag rugby with High Green Primary School taking home the glory.
We are keen to support the development of Rugby League in Schools across the city in the future and will hopefully be able to replicate this programme moving forward, funding dependant.
